"Flyer"

Working from life, all items were setup in my studio.

This painting shows my son's WWII P51 mustang flown by the Tuskegee Airmen. This remote controlled airplane is hanging by a tiny rope nailed on to a piece of broken wooden panel. The long shadow is as much as an element as the airplane. The shadow depicts the elusive representation of oppression... The pealing paint reveals the color underneath a facade of false purity.

Layering the paint, dramatic lighting, vivid colors, and carefully rendered textures to create an atmosphere that feels both familiar and distant. The realistic treatment of the objects is intentional; I want the viewer to recognize something tangible while allowing the objects to suggest a larger, unseen story.

For as long as I can remember I have had quite the affinity to the history surrounding World War II. I wanted to take a snapshot of a place in time or rather the feeling of a place in time and the impact on the individual.
I was inspired by the acts of heroism by the under represented and often marginalized members of our society. The toy reflects the act of using an object, then placing it somewhere will it will be utilized again at the whim of the user. The social and emotional fight these pilots endured was a testament to their valor and resilience.
