Marc Herring - Biography

Marc S. Herring, contemporary oil painter of memory, nostalgia, and reverence.

“Within ordinary objects are extraordinary histories waiting to be remembered."-- Marc S. Herring

Marc S. Herring is an American painter, sculptor, and visual arts educator whose work explores memory, history, nostalgia, time, and the emotional stories carried by objects.

Working primarily in oil on panel and paper, Herring creates atmospheric, highly detailed still lifes that combine traditional realism with contemporary narrative. Military artifacts, worn books, watches, photographs, flags, and everyday objects become vessels for stories about home, absence, sacrifice, service, childhood, and the passage of time.

Rather than depicting historical events directly, Herring focuses on the quiet human experiences surrounding them. Through dramatic lighting, deep shadows, weathered surfaces, and carefully constructed compositions, his paintings suggest the people and memories that exist beyond the objects themselves.

Titles are an important part of his process, often introducing an emotional or psychological dimension that invites viewers to construct their own interpretations.

Herring currently teaches visual arts at the Buffalo Academy for Visual and Performing Arts and has more than 18 years of experience as a visual arts educator. Based in Western New York, he continues to explore the connection between objects, memory, history, and the stories we leave behind.
